Welcome to The Shiskine Valley

Blackwaterfoot Bowling Club

Bowls has a weird and wonderful history, encouraged and banned by successive monarchs, often the preserve of the rich and almost universally perceived as a game for the old. The game is believed to have originated with the early Egyptians about 5,000 B.C. The sport spread across the world and took on a variety of forms, Bocce (Italian), Bolla (Saxon), Bolle (Danish), Boules (French) and Ula Maika (Polynesian).  We are all familiar with the story of Sir Frances Drake and the Spanish Armada. What could be more important than enjoyment?

Today bowls is played and enjoyed by all ages; youthful enthusiasm is certainly helpful but more so the skills developed by experience. We are fortunate that in Blackwaterfoot  we have the only outdoor carpet rink on the Isle of Arran. The rink is behind Shiskine Golf Clu tearoom, (which is open to the public). It is a great, even, surface ideal for the novice or the more advanced bowler to develop a consistent delivery without having to cope with the frustration that the vagaries of a grass rink can produce.
The rink can be used at any time, or join us at our club rink games. All you need is shoes without heels or spikes. All other equipment is included in the rink fee.

The proximity of the rink to the golf course is also an advantage because the two games have many features in common, judgement of line and length being the most obvious. The club at Blackwaterfoot has been in existence since 1980 and has, in all of that time, welcomed new members and visitors. We are happy to offer coaching and loan of equipment if you want to give bowls a try, come and join us at our open sessions on...
